Okay it's time to admit we’re a little worried about Drake Maye.
One touchdown and six interceptions through three games. Coming off a 35–6 loss to Jacksonville. The Trubisky comparisons. After what he did last season, I don’t think anyone expected us to be having this conversation already.
I’m still a Drake guy. But you can believe he’s the franchise quarterback and also say he’s playing really bad football right now. Both can be true.
The decision-making and confidence are what concerns me. On the interception before halftime against Jacksonville, Maye himself admitted he forced it trying to get a touchdown. I get wanting to give the offense a spark. But we need our quarterback to know when to take what’s there and live with it. Every drive can’t turn into an attempt to fix the entire season. ESPECIALLY after he had almost the exact same throw to end the Seattle game week 1.
Is it actually the yips? My concern is that the mistakes start feeding into each other. You throw a pick, feel like you owe everyone a big play, force another throw, and now you’re in an even bigger hole. You can tell he's a broken man.
That’s where I want to see the coaching staff (mostly McDaniels) help him. Maybe we move away from run, run, pass and start to move the ball efficiently. This team needs AJ back badly.
Nobody needs to start talking about replacing him. But “he’ll figure it out” only goes so far when we’re watching the same mistakes every week.
I still think he’ll be fine. I’d just really appreciate a Sunday where he gives us a reason to think that.
